The Prayer of a Minor Prophet

This is the prayer of a man called to be a witness to the nations. This is what he said to his Lord on the day of his ordination. After the elders and ministers had prayed and laid their hands on him he withdrew to meet his Saviour in the secret place and in the silence, farther in than his well-meaning brethren could take him. And he said:

O Lord, I have heard Thy voice and was afraid. Thou hast called me to an awesome task in a grave and perilous hour. Thou are about to shake all nations and the earth and also heaven, that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. O Lord, our Lord, Thou has stopped to honour me to be Thy servant. Living Before God’s Face

Bible Reading: 2 Chronicles 26:4

And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord – 2 Chronicles 26:4 NKJV

Our text for this week is a familiar testimony for some of the best kings of Israel and Judah. It was first said of David that ‘He did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD (1 Kings 15:5), and  subsequent kings who followed the footsteps of David were given similar commendation. There were however some of whom it was said that ‘they did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord’. Whether good or evil, the principal issue underlying any man’s conduct is the phrase – ‘In the sight of the Lord’. How God sees our actions, motives and intentions should be our primary concern.

There are some people who live to please themselves – Living before their own face. There are those who live to please others – Living before the face of men. Yet there are others, may be fewer and how blessed are these who live to please God – Living before the face of God. If God is pleased with a man, it doesn’t matter who is displeased with him and if God is not pleased with a man, it doesn’t matter who else is pleased with him.
